One year of Pondering....

Today is the first anniversary of this blog. I've been pondering longer than that I guess, but it's been a year since I put my first ponderings down in blog form. So, being a copycat, I thought I would commemorate the occasion in the same fashion as Crunchy Chicken, and have a celebratory book draw! And, I am such a copycat that I am going to hold the draw for the same exact book that I won from her: David Wann's Simple Prosperity.

I am almost finished reading this book and I will be done reading it by midnight MDT Monday, April 28th, 2008 which is when I'll close entry for the draw. I will make the draw on April 29th, and announce the winner on April 30th.

I recommend this book highly. It is a comprehensive and encouraging manifesto for how we as individuals and society can move towards a joyously moderate lifestyle that is based not on things, but on right relationship with ourselves, each other and the planet. I'd love to keep this book, but another copy will come my way somehow, one day. It's the kind of book that needs to be sent 'out there,' so that's what I'm doing! Plus, it's good to give something away that you really want to keep - it makes for a good lesson in healthy non-attachment to things.

So come one and all! Just leave me a comment and I will add your name into my super-duper random drawing contraption (sort of like my solar dryer roasting pan contraption, but with people's names in it instead of mango pieces!).

I would love to be entered in the drawing. I love the idea of passing books forward. Thanks for your pondering; it has given me lots to ponder as well. ;)

I have a book hoarding issue but I do make it a point to pass along important books such as

Long Emergency
Peak everything
Deep Economy
Twilight in the Desert
and I think I'll start adding Dereck Jensen books to the list of those I hand out.

In some cases I buy extra used copies just to make sure the people I want to read them have no excuse not to. You have to prod people a little to move them into the reality zone.

I'm not entering Theresa, because I just started my library copy of this book. :) But thanks for posting about your drawing on my blog. If you don't mind, I'll post about it in my next post.

Theresa! What a grand idea!! I 'browsed' this book whilst my daughter had it checked out from the library. But I'd love to have a chance to win it.
Say! why don't you inscribe a little note on the inside front cover? Did Crunch do that? Would that be a wonderful additional gift from a book: reading of its travels around the world from one blogger to another, each adding a little note inside...

Please enter me into your draw. I'd love to read that book and pass it on too!

Miss muffet - consider your self in!

Hello GAB - thanks for coming by! Can I assume that you are entering the draw?

Green Bean - I'm glad that was ok, I wasn't sure if I should mention it but it seemed to mesh so well with your Bookworm Challenge. Please do feel free to post about it!

Carla - no, the book was in nearly pristine condition when I received it from Crunchy, but I had thought of putting a little note in there when I passed it on to whoever wins it this time....:)

Hippie G - You're in!

Can I leave a comment without entering the drawing? :) It needs to go to a more deserving reader. Right now, my commitment to reading is entirely dependent on how many minutes I have per day...

But want to congratulate you on your anniversary and tell you that I still get misty when I read about your Eureka moment. Most people would have either not thought much of the caged chickens or turned their eyes away and continued to do what they do. You, on the other hand, changed your own life. To me, that is what enlightenment is all about - absorbing these moments and bettering one's life.

Wow, cindyw, thanks. That eye contact with the chicken was soul-changing, I must say. I still get misty when I think about it too. For a minute there, the chicken and I were connected, and afterwards nothing was the same anymore.

I think you should enter the draw...you'll want to read this book for more than a few minutes, I'm quite sure. But I won't enter you in the draw unless you say so of course!

Happy Blogday! Mine's in 5 days (Apr 30) -- it's kind of amazing to look back over this past year. Please enter me in your drawing, and if I win, I'll pass it on to someone else after I'm done.

Hi Theresa,

Thanks for your interest in Simple Prosperity, a book that might as well be called "Culture Shift." Whether at the personal or cultural scale, the same values guide us in the direction of sustainability. Currently, in our world, we're overfed but undernourished at both scales. It's people like those reading your blog who understand the immediate need for a new way of thinking. As Al Gore says (http://www.worldchanging.com/archives/007974.html
"We need to change more than just light bulbs, we need to change our policies, and our behavior."

Please email me your address, I'll replace the book for your drawing.

Cheers,
Dave Wann

Oh my! Thank you so much! That is so generous of you, Mr Wann. I would certainly love to be able to lend this book out to my family, and your kindness will enable me to do that. What an honor. Thank you.
